The Nature Committee (NATCOM) had intended to organize a Cleanliness Drive before going home for the coming vacations but it has been postponed to the first week of November. This step has been taken because we intend to get adequate number of dustbins in campus before students, faculty members, staff etc. are made a part of the Cleanliness Drive. Also, NATCOM feels that it is imperative that we segregate our wastes i.e. throw different kinds of wastes in different dustbins. We have submitted our proposal to the concerned authorities and if the proposal is accepted and granted funds for then by the time we come back from the vacations we will have implemented a segregated system of waste disposal in our University. Even the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (Salt Lake Municipal Corporation) does not have such a segregated waste disposal system. Once this system is implemented in our University, we will become one of the few Law Schools in India to have implemented such a system. Obviously this task is not as simple as it sounds. We can place different dustbins in campus but we also need to spread awareness of the benefits of this system and therefore, conduct orientation sessions with the housekeeping staff, office staff, faculty members and students. This ambitious project, if approved and successfully implemented, will ensure that all the recyclable wastes generated in the University either go to the Kabadiwalla or to a recycling agency. We now hope for the cooperation of the students and authorities alike. All we can say is we will do our best to make NUJS green.
